Oil and gas (all fossil fuels) are nominally cheap, but the real cost is rarely faced. These non-renewable energy sources are produced in the earth for millions of years, and usually use "free" to calculate the production cost; only the mining cost is calculated. Although it is possible to provide part of the hydrogen demand as a by-product of the petrochemical industry, any wattage of hydrogen energy beyond this part is still more expensive than other renewable energy sources (such as solar energy)
